Abstract

Educational and neuroscientific research confirms that handwriting is essential for cognitive, motor, and symbolic development, yet in the digital age this practice is increasingly neglected. Maria Montessori’s approach offers a meaningful response to this pedagogical challenge, as it integrates movement, perception, and thought within a unified learning process that places particular value on cursive writing. The acquisition of handwriting is structured around three key factors: the preparation of the hand, which refines fine motor skills; the discovery of sounds and graphic signs, which combines tactile, visual, and phonetic experiences through sensory materials such as sandpaper letters; and the composition of words, which separates the graphic act from the mental construction of language, fostering autonomy and awareness. These practices, now supported by neuroscientific evidence, demonstrate that handwriting can be effectively and naturally taught and maintained even in a technological era. The recent expansion of Montessori schools in Italy further enhances the potential of this approach to counter the decline of cursive writing, provided that its implementation remains faithful to the original principles of the Doctor from Chiaravalle, ensuring methodological coherence and high educational quality.
